This is a British Victory Medal, which was for those who served between August 5th, 1914 and November 11th, 1918. The name engraved on this medal is Private Hyman Katzman (service number 108712). Katzman joined in March of 1916 at the age of 20. He began his service in the 253rd battalion, and eventually transferred into the 5th reserve. During this period of service, Katzman was charged under a court martial with two counts. The first was being absent from parade and the second was for disobeying orders, resulting in one-year detention. He would end up sick in hospital before being discharged to the 75th battalion in March of 1918. This is a unique Victory Medal belonging to a storied unit that would become the Toronto Scottish unit post First World War.
